Chapter Fourteen

Exorcismus

The next day we were in the cafeteria when a teacher came over and tapped on John’s shoulder, who was sitting next to Jessica. The teacher murmured in his ear and suddenly John was up and moving, picking his tray of half-eaten food up and taking it to the trash can. He leaned down and said something to Jess and she nodded, her hand squeezing his arm.

“Who is that guy?” I asked Rain. He was the khaki pants, golf shirt kind of teacher, very suburban compared to the rest of our male teachers. Most of them were a little odd in one way or another, but this guy just looked like a dad who rode a lawnmower on weekends.

“Mr. Jordan. He’s the guidance counselor.” Rain was watching the door, a frown on her face, green eyes puzzled, as John and the counselor headed out into the hallway.

“Do you see something?” I asked her, suddenly feeling nervous. Intuition told me this wasn’t just a little chat over John’s grades. From what Jess had said, he was aceing everything but combat, a real academic kind of guy.

Which meant it could only be one thing.

“It’s his trial,” Rain said, her voice quiet, like answering us was an afterthought or an automatic response. Not like she had just said something so important.

Jessica heard her and nodded. “They’ll be calling us out in a minute, I’m sure. Fingers crossed for him, everyone. He knows his Latin backwards and forwards, but agility is his weakness.”

Nikki, another student who was a necromancer like Jessica, rubbed her temples like she’d suddenly gotten a headache.

“Liana, you need to prepare yourself,” Jess said. “A trial is an educational tool for the rest of us. They’ll have us study the demon before John exorcises him. So you totally should pay close attention.”

“An educational tool?” The pizza I’d been eating sat like a brick in my gut. My one and only exorcism had been unintentional and since then I’d encountered a demon twice and done nothing. I needed to stay back from the line of action and see if I could learn something. While I had been studying hard the history of demons and their classifications, along with my Latin, I was a total newbie and I hated that feeling. I wanted to kick demon ass. I didn’t want to be a sitting duck for Axel whenever he decided to come back for me.

The seers were the smallest group of students at school, yet they all seemed to have sensed something because there was a low hum in the cafeteria, and a lot of people were gathering their backpacks and tossing out their lunches.

That kind of collective power amazed me. How had they all simultaneously understood something was happening? I wished I had their skills, because I really wished I were more confident, that I knew everything I needed to know to avenge my mother and Chase, and protect myself and everyone around me. My leg bounced under the table with nervous energy and I realized that in a weird way I was looking forward to this.
